Spectral Element Analysis of Composite Patched Beam

Abstract


Ultrasonic guided waves in a composite patched structure require a reliable modeling and analysis technique which can provide accurate dynamic solutions in a high frequency range. Thus, a spectral element model is presented for a metallic beam with a surface-bonded composite patch. The governing equations of motion are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory to include lateral contraction in the thickness direction. The accuracy of the spectral element model is verified by comparing with the solutions by FEM and the effects of composite patch on the ultrasonic guided waves are numerically investigated.
